The boys' basketball team ended with a 7-17 o,erall record, and 3-11 in the CMC. The Eden Valley-Watkins School District announced that Mark Messman would replace retiring Larry Peterson as the new school superintendent. His term would begin in July. Messman was head football coach at Holdingford. Carl "Bill" Liedman of Kimball received the Boy Scout Silver Beaver award in recognition of his 35 years of volunteer service in the Boy Scout program. Hilltop Care Center in Wat- kins received a high xanking of five stars overall in the U.S. News & World Report's annual Best Nursing Homes report for all of 2011. Paynesville Area Health Care System CEO Bobbe Teigen resigned, effective Feb. 29. Arrivals: Feb. 23, James Dennis Beck to Dennis and Sara (Donnay) Beck of Kimball. MARCH March 2 was the Read Across America celebration at Kim- ball Elementary, with competi- tions, mystery readers, and lots of rowdy fun in honor of Dr. Seuss' (Theodor Geisel's) birthday. Bonnie Spohn, a teacher at Eden Valley-Watkins High School was one of 10 teachers awarded a $250 Office Max gift card by Community Page 13 II11' 'i' i i KAHS musicians. March 8, at their monthly meeting, Larry Flaschenriem was presented with the Helen Keller Award and pin. Flaschenriem and a handful of others started the Watkins Lions Club in October 1973. Mae Schmidt of Kimball retired from the Annandale State Bank after nearly 38 years. The bank held an open house in her honor • March 9. March 9 Kimball was graced with a concert of music from the 1930s, '40s and '50s by singer Rhonda Laurie and her band. The concert, at KAHS, was one of the cultural events made possible by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Maria Donnay was crowned March 10 as a Stearns County Dairy Princess. Resource Training and Solutions. A spaghetti dinner and silent auction benefit was held March 3 for Kennedy Schoenecker and her family at Grandpa Jerry's in Rich- mond. March 5, a 60-year-old Navy ship's anchor arrived by truck from Arlington Cemetery. Sen. AI Fran- ken was instrumental in obtaining the anchor that was installed in the spring in Eden Valley Veterans Memorial Park. Many members of the Eden Valley Legion gathered that cold morning to welcome the anchor at its .temporary location, Thielen Construction. State band solo and ensemble competition was held April 5 at EV-W High School. Three KAHS students received Best of Site: Shota Kuprava, guitar solo, and Chelsey Maus and Megan Jones, flute duet. State Excellent perfor- mances were by Erin Wicker and Alexis Rose. Thirty-three State Superior awards were earned by The Kimball Math Master team, consisting of five sixth- graders, took sixth place at the Minnesota Math Master Competi- tion in Hutchinson from among 17 teams competing. Township elections were held March 13, re-elected were Den- nis Loewen (Maine Prairie) and Les Rose (Fair Haven). Town- ship annual meetings were held that evening. At the Maine Prairie Township annual meeting a final decision was made to proceed with building a town hall on land across Hwy. 15 from the historic monument, land that was donated to the township by the Kuseske family. Kimball Elementary held their kindergarten round-up March 13. March 17 was the fifth annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pearl Lake.
