Next, the Cubs wrestled Orono and continued to wrestle well win- ning 10 matches overall against them. Caramon Hansen (140) wres- tled an aggressive match against Ryan Arne who is currently ranked number 3 in double A, also Travis Schiefelbein (152) stepped up to the challenge and bumped up a weight class to wrestle Joey Falde who is currently ranked 4th in double A. Both Caramon and Travis wres- tled very well, coming up on the losing end, but gaining a great deal of experience to help them make it through the home stretch. Kimball then took on the host team of Mound-Westonka who was running into match count issues so this dual was filled with forfeits. The Cubs took advantage of these and were able to save some of their kids from match count issues and get some younger kids a chance to wrestle varsity. Skyler Schiefel- bein (103) was able to step in for the Cubs at 103 pounds and get his first varsity win with a dominating match over his opponent pinning his kid in the third period. Wrestlers set new record against Royaltont Friday night, Jan. 29, the Cubs had a full evening planned, and a lot was on the line for the Cubs. We started the night out with 35 matches set up between Kimball's youth program and Royalton's program. The youngsters wres- tled hard in front of a huge crowd and all the kids had smiles on their faces as they walked offthe mat. The wrestlers returned home late on Thursday night. With the three dominating wins they had earned they just tied a 12-year-old record for the most wins in a sea- son for the team, that was set with the 97-98 team. The Cubs goal Fri- day was to set the new record and set up a chance for the conference title, they were able to do both with a convincing win over Royalton. The Cubs started out with four straight wins out of Marcus Hamer (103) with a major decision, Justin Huhn (112) received a forfeit, Tan- ner Mills (119) won by a major, and Tyler Kuechle (125) won by a deci- sion, to give the Cubs a 17-0 lead. Tyler had lost to his kid at the Roy- alton tournament in the finals 8-0, but came out and showed his oppo- nent he was the better wrestler, winning 4-0. Jordan Joseph (135) picked the Cubs up again with a technical fall and Caramon Hansen (140) came up with a fall over his opponent, and Mitch Pramann lost a very close match in overtime with a controversial take-down called by the ref. The Cubs had a 28-9 lead going into the 152-pound weight class where Travis Schiefelbein was able to get a pin. Travis Wills (160) followed it up with another pin for the Cubs and Austin Schiefelbein (189) finished it off for the Cubs recording a pin as well. With this win over Royalton, it gave the Cubs 20 wins on the sea- son, and if the Cubs can beat the Eagles from Eden Valley-Watkins, it will give them a share of the CMC Conference title. The Eagles will go into the match with a 6-0 record, and the Cubs with a 5-1 record in the CMC. Next up for the Cubs will be Fri- day, Feb. 5, where they will face a section 5A foe at Paynesville. Var- sity wrestling will begin at 7 p.m. Then the Cubs will be home for a very important quad Tuesday, Feb. 9, when theywill face three section 5A opponents in Eden Valley-Wat- kins, Minnewaska, and Sauk Cen- tre wrestling will begin at 5 p.m., when the Cubs will be wrestling Eden Valley-Watkins first because of this being a conference match, as well. The Cubs have some impor- tant matches on the line in the next couple of weeks and have been wrestling very well. We really appreciate the fan support we have been getting, and the kids elevate there game in front of big crowds. Now more than ever we will need as much fan support as possible to get the kids pumped up to finish this season well!
