Playing with great teamwork and sheer determination, Coach Jack Freeman had the Stars ready and confident moving into the 8AA Sections at the MAC in St. Cloud Saturday, Feb. 6. Sophomore for- ward Sierra Flint nailed the win- ning goal at 2:10 in the overtime frame, on a senior defenseman Sam Mugge assist. Mugge opened the game's scoring at 5:27 of the first period, on an assist from sophomore defenseman Courtney Hanson. Shots on goal favored St. Cloud, 30-29. The Stars' 2-1 vic- tory advanced them on to a show- down with No. 2 seed Sartell-Sauk Rapids Tuesday, Feb. 9 (at press time that result was unknown). Jansen is CMC Player of the Week EV-W's Reese Jansen has been named CMC Player of the Week. Reese is a junior guard on the EV-W boys' basketball team and scored 33 points in two wins for the Eagles. In those two games, Jansen was 8 for 9 (89 percent) from 3-point range. Reese also broke the school record for career assists with his 253rd career assist last week. EV-W girls finish week 1-1 By Pat Garry, Staff Writer The Lady Eagles played back- to-back games last week and came away with one loss and one victory. In a re-scheduled game at Howard Lake Thursday, Feb. 4, the girls lost 63-47. Bouncing back from that defeat, EV-W beat Maple Lake, 58-47, Friday, Feb. 5, after building a 33-24 halftime lead. Regional Spelling Bee scheduled By Sandra Cordie Dir. Educational Programs The Regional Spelling Bees for Central Minnesota will be Thursday, Feb. 11, (snow day set for Friday, Feb. 12) at Resource Training & Solutions offices, Sartell. There will be two similar Spelling Bees, morning at 9 a.m. and afternoon at 1 p.m. The rea- son for the two Bees is the large number of students participating. The top two spellers from each Bee will advance to the Multi-Regional State Spelling Bee Monday, Feb. 22, at the Lakes Country Service Cooperative, Fergus Falls (snow day is set for Tuesday, Feb. 23). The first and second place win- ners from each Regional Bee will receive a trophy and Barnes & Noble gift certificate. All four win- ners will advance to the Multi - Region State Spelling Bee. One winner from the Multi-State Regional Bee will go to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. May 22-28, 2016. Hockey boys blast Storm By Pat Garry, Staff Writer A dozen goals were scored at Sports Arena East last Monday, and 11 of them belonged to River Lakes. The Stars demolished Sauk Rapids-Rice, 11-1, in a Central Lakes Conference game, to start off the new month in good stride. Taking the shots on goal battle, 54-14, the Stars currently stand at 4-7 in conference play and 8-13 overall. Tyler Donabauer and Jake Rosenberger both found the back of the net twice, and Grant Thompson posted a pure hat trick in the second period. The other four Stars' goals were scored by Garret Leusink, Payton Madison, Kenneth Mooney, and Gavin Stanger.
