Three or four males with handguns entered the residence at 314 Third Ave. S. and shot the 45-year-old homeowner, Michael Hommerding in the upper torso. The investigation, which is ongoing, has led law enforcement officials to believe that the shooting was not random and could be drug-related. The victim was air-lifted to St. Cloud Hospital. 20 years ago Beginning, Sunday, March 10, 612 will no longer be the area code for Central Minnesota. That is the date when the Kimball area, along with a broad portion of Central Minnesota, will get its new 320 area code. After Sept. 15, use of the new area code (320) will be mandatory. 30 years ago Fortunately, there were no serious injuries when a Kimball bus went in the ditch on the way home from the Sunday evening professional All-Star Wrestling event in St. Paul. There were close to 40 passengers in it at the time and none were seriously injured although three were treated at the Buffalo Hospital and released. Icy conditions were blamed for the accident. 40 years ago Chris Veneff and Rick Napurski of Maple Lake set a world endurance skiing record at Powder Ridge. They skied for 50 hours 17 minutes with 10-minute breaks out of each two-hour period. They hope to have this record entered in the Guiness Book of World Records. This is the first time this record has been attempted. Compiled by Jayne Harff
