Tree tapping techniques will be described, followed by a hike into the woods to identify maple trees, tap a tree and collect the sap. The cooking process and syrup prepa- ration also can be examined. "Last year's maple syruping run slowed significantly because of warmer-than-normal winter and spring temperatures, but demon- strations will be held regardless of temperatures," says Park Manager Mark Crawford. Maple syruping began more than a century ago when Native Americans and later, European pioneers, used the same tapping Lake Maria and collection methods to pro- duce maple sugar, maple syrup and candy. "It's a fascinating and historically significant event for the entire family," reflects Craw- ford. There will be a drawing, for a State Park Gift Card March 24. The event is free. However, a $5 vehicle park-entry fee will be required for those without an annual permit, which are for sale at the park office for $25 and apply to all state parks. For more information, call the park office at (763) 878-2325, or visit its website at www.mnstate Lake Maria is located approximately seven miles north- west of Monticello, five miles north of Maple Lake and 10 miles northeast of Annandale on Wright County Highway 111.
