Tree-tapping techniques will be described followed by a hike into the woods to identify maple trees, how to tap a tree and how'to col- lect the sap. The cooking process and syrup preparation also can be examined. Sampling is encouraged. "Maple syruping began more than a century ago when Native Americans and later, European pioneers, 'used the same tapping and collection methods to pro- duce maple sugar, maple syrup and candy. It's fascinating and his- torically significant for the whole family," says Park Manager Mark Craw ford. The event is free. However, a $5 vehicle park entry fee will apply for those without an annual permit. Annual permits are for sale at the park office for $25 and apply to all state parks.
