Thursday, March 17, 2011 .[__ _ .._ ,:::MN_._: :7:: .ports Cubs advance in section 5AA playoffs By Jay Klein, coach For the first time in 11 years the Kimball boys' basketball team won a playoff game. The Cubs hosted the Legacy Christian Acad- emy Lions last Thursday night, March 10, in first-round action. Kimball jumped out to a great start scoring the first 10 points of the game. Legacy answered with a six-point run to trail by a score of 10-6. The teams remained close for the rest of the half, as Kimball went to the locker room with a five-point lead at 29-24. In the second half, the game remained tight. The Lions closed the gap with about seven minutes remaining and tied the score at 41 all. Big plays down the stretch allowed the Cubs to get the lead back and hold on to it. Kimball's last 12 points were scored at the free-throw line, as they made 12/14 to close out a 57-47 win. Neil Helgeson led all scorers in the game with 23 points. Dillon Menson and Brett Ostby chipped in with 11. Helgeson hauled down eight rebounds. Menson and Ty Filzen led the team with three assists each, and Cameron Hunt had three steals. The Cubs shot 84 percent (21/25) from the free- throw line. The Cubs were to have played Zimmerman Saturday, March 12, at St. Michael-Albertville. Details were not available at press time. Zimmerman was the number one seed in the north sub-section of section 5AA. The Cubs record now stands at 14-11 on the season. O' Loisuro. Page 17 II II III I II I! By Fritz Hoffmann, coach The Kimball Elementary boys' basketball team finished their sea- son Saturday, March 5, by taking part in the Kimball Boys Basket- ball Tournament. The boys started out the day by defeating Becker- Blue by a score of 26-17. They then came up against a very good Hold- ingford team who defeated the young Cubs, 35-30. This was an exciting game that had the Cubs trailing at the half 17-9, then get- ting to within two points of a tie in the second half, but losing a very well-played game. That put the Cubs into the third-place game which they won against Becket- White by a score of 27-19. The boys had a very successful 2010-2011 season as they played in a total of five tournaments and had three first-pLace finishes, one third place and one fourth place. They accumulated an over- all record of 19 wins and 5 losses. I would like to thank my wife Barb for her help throughout the year with keeping stats and help- ing on the bench when my atten- tion was directed to the games. I also want to thank the players and their parents for their dedication and allowing me the privilege to coach them this year. Team mem- bers were Aaron Serbus, AJ Hinz, Braden Hilary, Hayden Gagnon, Hunter Alrich, Michael Hoffmann, Parker Peglow, Trenton Hamilton and Weston Hine. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to next year.
