Thursday, April 9, 2009 Tri-County News Kimball, MN Student news Ridgewater College of Willmar announced that 25 new members have been inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society this spring semester. Sarah Erickson of Kimball ha been named among its ranks. Phi Theta Kappa is the interna- tional honor society for students enrolled in two-year community colleges. Students must have a 3.5 grade-point average to become members, and maintain at least a 3.25 GPA. Earth Day Expo at Great River Arts Call for participants The third annual Earth Day Expo will be held at the Great River Art Center from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25. Great River Arts is located at 122 SE 1st Street in downtown Little Falls. The event is free to the public and will include local artists, local "green" busi- nesses, music and activities for children. The coordinator of the event, Heidi Steadman, is looking for additional participants who have information to share, alternative energy solutions and products with a "green" nature. In 2008, the Expo had approximately 150 peo- ple come through. Each vendor donates one item to give away in a drawing, and there&apos;s a smallvendor entrance fee to help cover costs. Students Youth Page 11 Kimball Band Tour 2009 is now (medieval?) history The Kimball Area High School Band embarked on a concert tour to Chicago from March 20-23, and found the tour to be educational, fun, and personally rewarding. The band performed three times in the first two days. First, at Annandale, Minn. (an exchange concert with each band perform- ing for the other), then a clinic ses- sion with the Director of Bands at DePanl University and, finally, at a retirement home in Chicago for a wonderfully appreciative audi- ence. All pro- ceeds benefit the Keenan's Kids Foundation, <www.keenanskids All safety experts agree - hel- mets should be used in all contact sports and in any activity where potential head injury can occur - bicycling, skate boarding, in-line skating, etc. As a parent, it's important to remember that bicycles are associ- ated with more childhood injuries than any other consumer prod- uct (except the automobile), and nearly half of all children hospital- ized for bike-related injuries suffer traumatic brain injury. Each year, 82,000 people suffer brain injuries while participating in sports. Helmets are proven to reduce the risk of serious injury to the brain by 85 percent, according to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Insti- tute. Yet shockingly, fewer than 41 percent of children ages 5 to 14 wear helmets while participat- ing in wheeled activities and more than a third wear them incor- rectly. Here are a few tips to make sure your child is safe: 1. Only purchase helmets with a certification sticker: The helmet should have been inspected by at least one'of the following agencies and carry a proof sticker or label: Consumer Products Safety Com- mission, Snell, ASTM, or ANSI. These companies make sure the helmets meet current safety stan- dards. 2. Review consumer reports before making a purchase: Visit the Consumer Product Safety Com- mission site at <www.cpsc.gov> foundation.com>. dR success in a musical sense. However, the tour was not sim- ply a performance tour, but an educational adventure into the "big city." In addition to the per- formances, the band toured the "Miracle Mile," the Field Museum of Natural History, China Town, the Sears Tower, Navy Pier, the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Museum of Science and Industry, and par- took in a jousting tournament at the Medieval Times Dinner The- atre and an "intellectual compe- tition" at Comedy Sports. For a break in the return trip, the group also made a stop at the Kalahari Water Park (at Wisconsin Dells) to cool off from the "hot" trip! Even the fake "dreads" weren't too hip for this trip. The Band students not only had a great experience in seeing the city of Chicago and it's "sights," three excellent performances en route, and the fun of traveling with friends, but they conducted them- selves as positive ambassadors of the greater Kimball community. The students got "rave reviews" from tour guides, bus drivers, and hotel/event staff (not to men- tion their proud band director) over their maturity and conduct throughout the trip. This outstand- ing behavior was greatly aided by the wonderful work of our chaper- ons: Steve, Debbie, Sue, Deb, Lori and Pare, to whom our gratitude is extended and can never be repaid. They, maybe, had more fun than the students, but we'll never tell! The KAHS Band is truly a group that the community, as a whole, can be proud of, as a performance group, and as a representation of our entire community. Keith Haake, KAHS Band Dir. diversiCOM names Laurie Garcia their Teacher of the Year Sauk Centre Supt. Dan Brooks had concluded a portion of a workshop day, April 2, when he announced that personnel from diversiCOM were special guests. Dave Del Zoppo, diversiCOM CEO was in attendance to announce that EBD Special Education teacher Laurie Garcia had been chosen as diversiCOM's 2009 Teacher of the Year. Several years ago diversiCOM extended their long standing schol- arship program to include aTeacher of the Year. This award is presented to a teacher employed by a school within the diversiCOM service area. The winning teacher receives a tro- phy that recognizes their commit- ment to excellence in education, and a $2,000 cash prize. This year the program was extended again to include the winning school. Supt. Brooks was presented a check for $1,000 to be used for technology purposes. diversiCOM seeks nominations through a variety of media ways. Nominee information is reviewed by a Selection Committee that changes yearly and generally con- sists of various school administra- tors and customers. The nominees are scored on criteria such as indi- vidual teaching style, creativity in encouraging student achievement, consistent support of students' growth, and community involve- ment. The 2009 diversiCOM Teacher of the Year winner, Laurie Gar- cia, is described as someone who brings humor, a positive attitude Dave DelZoppo of diversiCOM with and enthusiasm to make sure that each student who crosses her path does their very best. She strives to find the success that is within each child. This involves taking the time to talk one-on-one to share their struggles and celebrate their achievements. Like many teach- ers, the gratification comes in the 'ThankYou' received from students and more importantly from past students.
