ql PAGE 28 April 21, 2016 Letters from Afghanistan April 21, 2016 Another week closer to leaving this place! This week has been quite busy. It was the kickoffto "fighting season." We had a total of 6 IDFs and a whole bunch of them hit base. One Afghani died from the shrapnel from one IDF after he bled out. We did a bunch of missions this week, too. This week I thought that I would talk about a couple of different things. Some of you readers asked about the dating life in the military. My opinion is that it's pretty hard because people are constantly moving base-to-base, deploying, and being a cop makes it more difficult too. Nobody really wants to see cops, and it's hard to talk to different career fields. Another question was how hard is it to maintain relationships with a significant other, family, and friends while deployed. It's not like the USA where you get LTE or 4G wherever you go. We only get wifi in our dorm hallway or office. The wifi isn't the best. It's extremely spotty, and it's down a lot for repairs. Otherwise a lot depends on how much free time you get leftover in your day to talk to loved ones. Nights it was easier, but since I switched to working days it's been difficult. Whenever I'm up my family is sleeping and vice-versa. I talk to my family now about twice a week. I know a lot of people here have trouble talking to their loved ones back home, but soon we will be back. I hope you enjoy your week! Allie Powell is the daughter of Connie Powell, granddaughter of Ron Knaus, and great-granddaughter of Carlyle and Laverne Knaus. She graduated from Apollo High School in St. Cloud, but she has strong ties to Kimball. If you're curious about some aspect of her life and work in Afghanistan, send your questions through us here at the Tri-CountyNews!
