14 Kimball Tri-County News--Thursday, April 25, 1991 Robert T. Smith _ The Florida newspapers stayed away from naming the woman. They, and others, however reported details surrounding the woman that revealed her to many. Most of the media remained Oriental Chow Mein; It's tough on the media involved but, all-in-all, I like the British system of criminal justice better than ours. In general, the British press gets very little about a crime and a person charged until the trial. Then there are restrictions. There is normally no trying of a case in the newspapers or on television. The British criminal justice system strongly believes in innocence until proven guilty or until found guilty by a jury and crime victims are equally protected. In the so-called "Kennedy case," you have an example of the worst in journalism. First of all, it's called the Kennedy case although no one named Kennedy has been implicated in any crime. A suspect, William Smith, nephew of Sen. Ted Kennedy, has not been charged-but his name has been made public by the media. Innocent until proven guilty? How about anonymous until charged? Then we come to the most outrageous breach of journalistic honor: the naming of the alleged rape victim. pure, until a sleazy gosap sheet in Florida, one of those supermarket liars, printed the woman's name. Then, for some incredible reason, NBC television decided that was sufficient justification for it to name the woman. The supermarket disgrace to journalism does something radically wrong, and that makes it OK for NBC? Finally, the normally prestigious New York Times uses NBC for its excuse to expose the woman. Other newspapers followed the distorted leadership in the practice. Thankfully, our Minnesota newspapers stuck to the original policy. The Times long has been based on integrity in journalism. Whenever I have been attacked by anti-press people, I say thins such as: "Well, we still have the New York Times." That hallowed name usually at least stalls the attackers. But can I use example any more? The reasons not to use a rape victim's name are well-known. Among a main one is that it inhibits future victims from trying to get justice. On WCCO-Radio the other day, call-in women were asked if they would report a/'ape if they knew their names would become public. All I heard said: "No." Let's quit being led by the nose by sleazy publications. Let's stick to the good policies.
