INDEPENDENT SENIOR APARTMENTS 55 & older Most utilities included Garages available Miscellaneous Spring tree care By Nathan Winter, Extension Educator Meelcer & McLeod Counties Early spring is a great time to survey your yard for tree branches that need to be removed or trimmed. When new leaves appear, it is easy to spot dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Small branches may be easily pruned out, but hire an arborist or tree care specialist to cable or remove large branches. Following is a great link to learn more about pruning trees and shrubs: http://z. Early spring is also a great time to plant bare root trees. These trees can be purchased for a lower price than container-grown trees, but must be planted right away. Choose a cool, cloudy day if pos- sible to prevent roots from drying out during the process of planting. Remember the "right tree in the right place" rule when planting new trees and consider the size of the area you will be planting your new tree in and how large that tree will ultimately grow to be. Many times, large trees are planted in places that are far too small for them. Recommended trees for all regions of Minnesota can be found at the University of Minnesota Extension Website: http://z.umn. edu/lO5q. When planting trees, also keep in mind that high species diversity is important. While a street lined with maples may be beautiful in the fall, it is not beneficial for the urban forest as a whole to consist of only a few species. Maples rot easily when they grow old, and soon that beauti- fully-lined maple street may end up with very few large trees. Planting many different species allows for problems like this to be avoided, as well as avoiding countless pest and disease problems. Healthy trees and a diverse urban forest can save communities thousands of dol- lars in tree removal, treatment, and invasive species problems. If you are unsure of what is causing problems in your land- scape, the University of Minnesota Extension Website has numer- ous resources to help homeown- ers diagnose tree, shrub and plant problems or identify a weed or insect. This site also has links to the University of Minnesota Plant Disease Clinic and Soil Testing Lab: Further questions can be directed to the McLeod County Extension Office at (320) 484-4303, or the Meeker County Extension Office at (320) 693-5275.
