Ill'Ill I Stearns Dairy Field Day Aug. 20 near St. Rosa By Dan Martens, U ofM Extension Emily Krekelberg, Stearns-Ben- ton-Morrison Extension colleague, provided this information recently. People in the area with an interest are invited to attend. The University of Minnesota Extension will host a Dairy Field Day at Keffeld Hillview Dairy on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Kerfeld Hillview Farm is owned by Tim, Carrie, Art, and Rosie Ker- feld. They, along with their five chil- dren, milk 175 cows in a naturally- ventilated 4-row freestall barn with cyclone fans, mattresses and pen pack calving area. There are also some precision technologies used on the farm. The Kerfelds use a Lely Calm Automatic calf feeder, which was installed 4 years ago. They also utilize SCR (Lely T4C) activity mon- itors for heat detection in both their heifers and cows. They have a monoslope heifer barn that is very labor efficient, also offering custom farming services. Kerfeld Hillview Farm operates under a Partnership and S Corporation. Various University of Minne- sota Extension Staff will be on hand to give tours, answer ques- tions, and offer insight, along with learning from the Kerfelds. Those Extension Staff attending include Jim Salfer, Regional Extension Edu- cator in Dairy; Dan Martens, Crop Production Systems Educator in Stearns, Benton, and Morrison Counties; and Emily Krekelberg, Livestock Production Systems Edu- cator in Stearns, Benton, and Mor- rison Counties. The farm is located at 30257 County Road 17, Melrose MN 56352. Directions to the farm from St. Rosa: 1 mile north on County Road 17; left (West) on County Road 17 about 1 mile; farm is on left. There will be a lunch pro- vided at the event, sponsored by Central Minnesota Credit Union. Additional sponsors for the event include AgStar Financial Services, Central Minnesota Dairy Profit Team, Minnesota Dairy Initiatives, and VitaPlus. Although pre-registration is not required, it is requested in order to help with the meal count. Please RSVP to the Stearns County Extension Office at (320) 255-6169. Thanks, Emily! I'll add that the Kerfelds have recently been working through some decisions about bedding and manure handling strategies. As always on these tours, there is as much to be learned by listening to how people are thinking through the options, decisions and things they are working on, along with see- ing what they are doing. The Ker- felds are practical and perceptive in talking about their experiences with things around the farm. We aim to keep the discussion informal enough so you have a chance to get at the things that might be useful on your farm or in your business. Legals also are available on-line at www.tricountynews.MN
