II]111 ' I' II Students Youth Kristina Kastanek State Fair Grand Champion 4-H Poultry Show Grand Champion Egg Production Chickens The crowds enthusiastically praised the 257 4-H participants in this year's Minnesota State 4-H Poultry Show. The show included many excellent chickens, ducks, geese, guineas, pigeons and tur- keys. Wayne Fischer, Butch Gunderson and Bart Pals master- fully worked with the youth and evaluated the classes to recog- nize the excellence. The 4-H'ers proudly showed off their projects and shared their knowledge with the judges. Kristina Kastanek of Meeker County exhibited the Grand Champion Egg Production Chick- ens at the 2011 Minnesota State Fair 4-H Poultry Show. Congratu- lations Kristina! Kristina is the daughter of Jeff and Becky Kastanek of South Haven. The 4-H Poultry Show at the Minnesota State Fair is one of the many educational events coor- dinated by University of Minne- sota Extension and conducted by county educators and 4-H volun- teers. 1 11 r' Dollar Louis Olson Grand Champion at State Fair 4-H Goat Show Grand Champion Oberhasli Junior Doe The Minnesota 4-H Goat Show continues to expand as 276 head were exhibited this year at the Minnesota State Fair Friday, Aug. 26. In addition to the exhibition of the project animal, participants are encouraged to sign up for showmanship so they can show their knowledge, grooming skills and han- dling technique. Each participant must also complete an animal science interview to enhance the learning experience and have the opportunity to earn additional recognition. Evaluating this ear's 4-H Dairy Goats was Kathy Smith and Loren Larson. Judge Smith is a 4-H mum who maintains the goats after her 4-H'ers graduate, they have shown Alpines, Nubians, and Toggen- burgs over their many years of showing. After his 4-H career, he became a licensed ADGA judge and currently still holds that license. Loren and his family raise Nubians, Lamanchas, and Toggenburgs. Louis Olson of Meeker County exhibited the Grand Champion Oberhasli Junior Doe at the 2011 Minnesota State Fair 4-H Dairy Goat Show. Congratulations Louis! Louis is the son of Mike and Roxanne Olson of Dassel. The 4-H Dairy Goat Show at the Minne- sota State Fair is one of the many educa- tional events coordinated by University of Minne- sota Extension and conducted by county educators and 4-H volunteers. Meeker County 4-H at State Fair 2011 Minnesota State Fair Animal Science Interview Finalists and Winners Animal Science Interviews at the Min- nesota State Fair are designed to further enhance educational opportunities for young people exhibiting livestock. The interview process offers a visual philoso- phy of recognizing 4-H participants who have utilized their livestock project to grow and develop as a young person. Livestock interviews emphasize many life skills such as communication, responsibility, decision making, and problem-solving. The inter- view process is seen as a step to help insure the stability of youth livestock shows as a positive form of youth development. Interview Finalists will receive a polo shirt, donated by AgStar. Interview Win- ners will receive a chair, sponsored by Min- nesota Livestock Breeders Association. This year, 10 Meeker County 4-H'ers received recognition for their outstanding livestock knowledge and interview skills.
