PAGE 9 Se 2016 By Pat Garry, StaffWriter Last Friday, Sept. 16, the Cubs played host to a formida- ble Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg squad. Kimball held a touchdown lead at the half, but the Saints put up an 8-spot in the third stanza, and that would be all they needed to secure the 8-7 win. It was a pro- verbial defensive battle and the Cubs managed just 20 rushing yards in the contest. The Cubs struck first in the turnover battle with an interception from Senior DT Nate Vossen. Kimball also struck first on the scoreboard with a bullet from Drew Gustafson to senior WR Darius Westrich. Darius caught a shallow hitch and made an outstanding move and broke it to the outside for a long touch- down run. Mike Hoffmann nailed home the extra point with author- ity, to put the Cubs up 7-0. "Turnovers once again caused us difficulties tonight. We threw an interception that gave the Saints a short field. They were able to cap- italize and put one on the board. The Saints made a gutsy call and went for two running the old swinging gate play. They scored and went up 8-7," said Coach Joe Brennan. The Cubs had a few opportunities but were unable to capitalize on their final posses- sions. Scoring: Kimball: Darius Westrich, 35-yd. pass from Drew Gustafson (Michael Hoffmann, kick); KMS: Caleb Collins, i-yd. run (Weston Gjerde pass from Collins).
