Legals also are available on-line at WWW. tricountynews.MN Le00tals Government Thursday, September 30, 2010 Tri:County News Kimball, MN Citizens needed to train to respond to disasters The Retired and Senior Vol- unteer Program (RSVP), in part- nership with Stearns and Benton County Emergency Management, is looking for citizens to join the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). CERT is a program sponsored by the Federal Emergency Manage- ment Agency (FEMA) to improve homeland security in local com- munities by training volunteers to respond to disasters. Training cov- ers the areas of disaster prepared- ness, fire suppression, medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization, disaster psy- chology and terrorism awareness. The twenty-hour course teaches volunteers to assist themselves and their families in the event of an emergency. Additionally, vol- unteers are available to help in the community when emergency responders are overwhelmed in the event of a large-scale disaster. Dur- ing non-disaster times, volunteers promote preparedness in the com- munity at local events and partici- pate in local disaster drills. To date, CERT has trained more than 500 volunteers, ranging in age from 18-82. The volunteers stand ready to serve the residents of Stea- ms and Benton Counties, a com- bined population of nearly 187,000 people. CERT members must be a resi- dent or employee of Stearns or Ben- ton County and must pass a crimi- nal background check. Interested persons can join the Steams and Benton County Com- munity Emergency Response Team by attending an eight-week training course Tuesday evenings in Octo- ber and November, starting Oct. 12.
