Lake Covenant Chu00 www.tricou ntynews. M N Community ,. Thursday, October 21, 2010 -C0unty News. Kimball, MN .... 'UnL: Ig[ .. .... Kimball Area Friends of the Library news As many organizations evalu- ate their sustainability, the Kim- ball Area Friends of the Library is no different. Many clubs and com- munity groups face the same situ- ation: lack of membership and lack of community participation at the sponsored-events. The programs are still there, as good as always - perhaps even better; however, the people aren't (there). In 1998, the Friends of the Library (FOL) organization was created by interested com- munity members for the pur- pose of supporting the Kimball Branch of Great River Regional Library (GRRL). Twenty individ- uals attended that first meet- ing. There were many people who were involved in the library and its programming, and they saw a reason to add to its benefits. Over the first few years, member- ship grew to more than 100 indi- viduals, families and businesses. In recent years, our membership averages 40-60 members. At the bi- monthly meetings for the past five years, we're fortunate if we have the officers and Carla (the Kimball Branch Librarian) present to dis- cuss our agenda. The membership is waning and so is the participa- tion on the board. We would also like to see more members at the FOL meetings. Since the initial gathering, the KimballArea Friends of the Library has sponsored the annual Din- ner with an Author. Last Novem- ber, we completed 10 great years with 10 great authors ,Kate DiCa- millo, DougWood, Lorna Landvikl scriptions. Because of lack of par- ticipation, we forewent the Spring Luncheon and Dinner with an Author in 2010. This past year, we did not have the ice cream social in June to kick-off the annual chil- dren's summer reading program. Again, low attendance the pre- vious year had an effect on our decision to sponsor the ice cream social. The Friends has purchased the children's prizes for the sum- mer reading program for many years. We have noticed a declinein the number of children who par- ticipate in this program. Thank you to all the charter members of Kimball Area Friends of the Library and to those who comprised the first board. To all members and officers since the first meeting to the present, we thank you, and we appreciate all you have done for the Friends and the Library. Thank you to the current board members: Jenni- fer Schiefelbein (Vice President), Kathy Ahlrich (Secretary), and Lisa Schiefelbein (Treasurer). We are looking for new and innovative ideas for the future direction of the Friends organi- zation. If you are interested in a book club as part of the Friends, we would like to hear from you. If you're one of those people who like to see the library (all librar- ies) remain viable, we would love to hear your voice. If you think the library is an asset to the com- munity, think everyone should be life-long learners, enjoy using the library,: want to know more ab0ut library services and activ- Steve Thayer and Will Weaver, to name a few. The spring luncheons have been hosted, by the Friends, the most recent yer at the behU tifully rustic Fairhaven Farm. The Friends of the Library has spon- sored a float in the Kimball Days Parade in previous years, promot- ing both the organization and the library. For seven or eight years, we have had an annual basket raffle with themed baskets. The money raised from the raffle and other events is used to support the library, whether it's supporting the wonderful programs or purchas- ing such items as a new magazine rack to hold all the magazine sub- ities, then please contact us to let us knowyou wouldlike to see the Friends of the Library continue! we woiild iiketo have new board names in place by Feb. 1, 2011, to avoid disbanding. The new board would begin April 1. If no one comes forward, the orga- nization would disband in April. There has been informal discus- sion of changing meetings to three meetings per year. If we seat a new board by April, we would pro- pose a vote to our membership to change the bylaws to three meet- ings each year instead of the cur- rent six (meetings per year). We realize everyone is busy with other things in their lives: work, chil- dren and their activities, church involvement - the list goes on. However, we don't want to see the Friends organization disappear. We support the library and all it has to offer! Where else on earth can you borrow 900,000 books, DVDs, CDs and magazines, have access to electronic resources/ databases and computers/Inter- net, and enjoy adult and children's programming, all for FREE? Please consider becoming involved in Kimball Area Friends of the Library. Contact me or Carla (Librarian, 398-3915) if you have any questions or if you are inter- ested in the board positions of vice president, secretary or treasurer. (The vice president replaces the president after one year. All other offices are one-year terms.) It is our goal to have a board in place by Feb. 1, to begin the new term April 1, 2011. We would like to hear from you by Thursday, Nov. 4. We appreciate your interest and your involvement. Good libraries need good Friends!
