PAGE 17 Eagle boys' basketball splits week on the road By Pat Garry, Staff writer The EV-W Eagles hit the road Tuesday, Dec. 10, and beat the Huskers of Holdingford in a good contest, 53-49. Eden Valley-Wat- kins found themselves down a dozen at the half, but they turned up the defense and the sharp- shooters came alive, outscoring the Huskers by 16 points in the sec- ond stanza. Eagles' coach Adam Langer is happy to get that first conference win. "We really strug- gled with our shooting in the first half. In the second half, we made it a priority to get the ball inside and things started to turn around. Alex Nesenson had two big three-point field goals in the last two minutes of the game to give us the lead, and Jared Streit sealed the game with two free throws in the last five sec- onds. It wasn't pretty, but we bat- tled through shooting struggles to get our first conference win." The Eagles were led by junior forward Jared Streit, with 17 points. Junior guard Bret Mattice poured in 13, and hit three-for-three from the charity stripe. Senior Alex Nesen- son finished with 9, and junior Austin Schlangen posted a dou- ble-double, with 10 points and 17 boards. Senior Nick Pauly had 4. Friday, the 13th, saw the Eagles visit the Rockford Rockets. Down 35-26 at halftime, the Eagles could not stop the hosts' hot hands, los- ing 69-61. Junior guard Bret Mat- tice finished with 25 points, nailing seven from three-point range. It was Jared Streit's turn for a double- double, finishing with 11 points, 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Reese Jansen and senior Nick Pauly had 6 apiece, Alex Nesenson had 3, and Austin Schlangen recorded 4. The Eagles will welcome Pierz Tuesday, Dec. 17, and will play in the St. John's Prep Tournament Thurs- day-Saturday, Dec. 19-21, before the Holiday break. Eagle wrestlers find going tough at Paynesville Tri By Pat Garry, Staff writer The Eden Valley-Watkins grap- plers traveled to Bulldog country Thursday, Dec. 12, for the Paynes- ville Triangular. Coming out on the short side and wrestling with a number of open slots, the Eagles dropped both of their matches; 46-19 to Rocori and 45-28 vs. Paynesville. EV-W coach Dan Berg knows the difficulty in wrestling with so many open weight divi- sions. "Well, overall we wrestled well, but with five forfeits it's tough to win a dual. Matt Schindler had a good night with two big wins, along with Hunter Mathies' two pins, and Luke Kuechle's two pins." Cain Renner had two wins and a come-from-behind win against Paynesville. "Down 5-0, he battled back and pinned his oppo- nent in the third period. It was a gutsy performance by Cain to battle back and win," added Berg. "Now we'll take a little break until Tuesday, when we go battle Rock- ford and Pierz." EV-W vs. Rocori: 113-pound decision, Matt Schindler; 132-pound Fall, Hunter Mathies; 170-pound Fall, Luke Kuechle; 182-pound decision, Cain Renner. EV-W vs. Paynesville: 113- pound decision, Matt Schindler; 126-pound Fall, Tyler Donnay; 132-pound Fall, Hunter Mathies; 170-pound Fall, Luke Kuechle; 182-pound decision, Cain Renner. Next action for EV-W is Tues- day, Dec. 17, at the Rockford Trian- gular and Friday, Dec. 20, at home for a Quad Invite. Century 21 kids spreading Christmas Cheer Eden Valley Area Library (EVAL) were the recipients of a gift of handmade bookmarks from the Century 21 Kids. The group took time out of a busy day of tubing at Powder Ridge to stop by the library and spread some Christmas Cheer. Using colorful ribbon, buttons and interesting adornments, they made adorable bookmarkers for the library to offer its patrons. The EVAL would like to Pay It Forward and invite the public to accept a free bookmarker next time you stop by the library. Submitted photo. : :'. @ i"" ..... " ,.i""i ' '.;4 l'i '::,iF " " .......
